Summary

A TV script writer thinks she's over romance, until an unlikely love interest upends all her assumptions: a humorous, subversive and tender-hearted novel from the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of RodhamAmerican Wife and Prep

Life is (not)* a Romantic Comedy。。。

With a series of heartbreaks under her belt, Sally Milz - successful script writer for a legendary late-night TV comedy show - has long abandoned the search for love。

But when her friend and fellow writer begins to date a glamorous actress, he joins the growing club of interesting but average-looking men who get romantically involved with accomplished, beautiful women。 Sally channels her annoyance into a sketch, poking fun at this 'social rule'。 The reverse never happens for a woman。

Then Sally meets Noah, a pop idol with a reputation for dating models。 But this isn't a romantic comedy - it's real life。 Would someone like him ever date someone like her?

Skewering all our certainties about why we fall in love, Romantic Comedy is a witty and probing tale of how the heart will follow itself, no matter what anyone says。 It is Curtis Sittenfeld at her most sharp, daring and compassionate best。

I thought this was a thoroughly entertaining novel。 The author writes like someone that worked on SNL & used it to create a similar setting。 I did find it hard to read about the pandemic again but I thought the way it was written was creative & well thought out。 I found the characters entertaining & highly recommend reading this book。Thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for advanced copy in exchange for my honest review

Can they even be friends? Or will Sallys rules on love get in the way? Sally is deeply flawed and doesn’t think she can be loved or even liked to an extent。 She really doesn’t know her true talent or that others may be able to see it, or maybe she just doesn’t believe it couple ever exist。 She’s super hard on herself and tend to self sabotage her relationships。 Noahs every move is monitored and every relationship is documented by paparazzi。 Not much of his life is wholly his own。 This book was super fun to read。 I liked how the novel is set up into 3 Chapters of their lives and i liked peeking into Sallys head and what she was thinking while everything was happening。 I heard a lot about this book and knew I needed to read it and i am so glad i got the chance to。 I highly recommend if you like… as the title says romantic comedies。 And the side characters made the story even cuter。 Everything with Jerry was very sweet and made me happy that Sally had such a good relationship with him even after her mom passed。 So cute!!! 。。。more

Interesting and enjoyable book! It’s different than the typical romance book set up。 Romantic Comedy is divided into three long chapters。 I am a fan of Saturday Night Live which the book’s fictional show The Night Owls is based off, so that was fun to read about。 Even though the plot may seem a little far fetched with a romance between a comedy writer and a famous singer, their relationship felt very realistic。 It may be a trigger warning for some, but Covid is talked about heavily in this book。 Interesting and enjoyable book! This book is more satirical in its humor, so it may not be for everyone。 I did have a good time reading it though and thought it was refreshing。 Thank you Netgalley for the free advance reader copy of this book in exchange for a review! Romantic Comedy will officially release on April 4。 。。。more

"Romantic Comedy" by Curtis Sittenfeld is a delightful, smart, and refreshing take on the classic rom-com genre。 As a fan of both romantic comedies and comedic writing, I was immediately drawn to the premise of the book, and Sittenfeld did not disappoint。The novel follows the story of Sally a comedy writer who works for a popular sketch show much like SNL。 When she meets Joshua, a famous musician who performs on the show, she finds herself sensing a spark, but isn’t sure that a famous musician c "Romantic Comedy" by Curtis Sittenfeld is a delightful, smart, and refreshing take on the classic rom-com genre。 As a fan of both romantic comedies and comedic writing, I was immediately drawn to the premise of the book, and Sittenfeld did not disappoint。The novel follows the story of Sally a comedy writer who works for a popular sketch show much like SNL。 When she meets Joshua, a famous musician who performs on the show, she finds herself sensing a spark, but isn’t sure that a famous musician could actually have feelings for a low key comedy writer。 Sittenfeld's writing is sharp, witty, and infused with humor, making it a joy to read。 The characters are well-developed and complex and reading about them navigating the ins and outs of a relationship was enjoyable。。Overall, "Romantic Comedy" is a five-star read that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves a good romance or a well-written and smart comedy。 Thank you to Netgalley for sharing this Arc in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Another feel good book from Curtis Sittenfeld。 Nothing like a good romantic comedy set against the backdrop of a live comedy show。 Funny, endearing, and cute。

This was a well-titled book! This enjoyable romantic comedy is set in NYC at a very SNL-esque comedy show。 Part of it takes place during the pandemic, which brought back all the worry and trauma of that time, but overall the characters, will-they-or-won't-they vibe, and the gender commentary made this a very enjoyable read。 This was a well-titled book! This book has a lot of positive reviews so all I can think is that I am not the right person for this story。 I found the first part of the book tedious。 It’s all about the mechanics of a SNL-like tv show。 Some information would have been fine。 But this part of the book drags on and on。 And it doesn’t advance the storyline。 The second part is during COVID with all the things we just lived through; lockdown, sanitizing, etc。 etc。 Too much too soon。 We are still suffering a worldwide pandemic。 My r This book has a lot of positive reviews so all I can think is that I am not the right person for this story。 I found the first part of the book tedious。 It’s all about the mechanics of a SNL-like tv show。 Some information would have been fine。 But this part of the book drags on and on。 And it doesn’t advance the storyline。 The second part is during COVID with all the things we just lived through; lockdown, sanitizing, etc。 etc。 Too much too soon。 We are still suffering a worldwide pandemic。 My reading is a time to escape from this。 And lastly I just didn’t much like the MC Sally。 She’s too old to be so immature。 I was provided this book by NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for my feedback。 。。。more

I keep going back and forth with how I feel about this book, but I think I’m landing on the idea that it just wasn’t for me。 The first part of the book was way too long and was way too in depth about the SNL-adjacent show procedure/behind the scenes。 I was cringing at the jokes and sketch premises (it was millennial humor to the extreme, and I just couldn’t get behind it)。 The second part of the book is what brought me back in。 The heart of the book is in these email exchanges between our two ch I keep going back and forth with how I feel about this book, but I think I’m landing on the idea that it just wasn’t for me。 The first part of the book was way too long and was way too in depth about the SNL-adjacent show procedure/behind the scenes。 I was cringing at the jokes and sketch premises (it was millennial humor to the extreme, and I just couldn’t get behind it)。 The second part of the book is what brought me back in。 The heart of the book is in these email exchanges between our two characters, and I loved them。 This was the closest to a “romantic comedy” the book ever got。 The final part of the book just made me sad in general about the height of the pandemic and I don’t enjoy reading/watching media taking place then。 It’s still weird to me, to think about such an intense and despondent time in our lives as a plot point in fiction, and I think this should be added to the description so readers know how prevalent it is to the plot。 I still think this book was well-written, it just wasn’t for me at all。 。。。more

Holy shit – a 5 Star read。 This is not a test。 Run do not walk to your local library or bookseller next Tuesday。 Orrrrrrrrrr maybe only do so if you are a Saturday Night Live superfan? This is a new to me author as I primarily read romance。A comedy sketch writer for a late night show (read: SNL) and the week’s musical guest hit it off during the show’s week long prep。 Their romance is told in 3 parts。 The 1st 3rd of the book is very slice of life, written very conversationally, just a play by play of a week in the life of an SNL comedy sketch writer (TNO in the book)。 So if you don’t think that sounds entertaining, you might not like this book bc it starts a bit slow。 I was fa This is a new to me author as I primarily read romance。A comedy sketch writer for a late night show (read: SNL) and the week’s musical guest hit it off during the show’s week long prep。 Their romance is told in 3 parts。 The 1st 3rd of the book is very slice of life, written very conversationally, just a play by play of a week in the life of an SNL comedy sketch writer (TNO in the book)。 So if you don’t think that sounds entertaining, you might not like this book bc it starts a bit slow。 I was fascinated by it。 And no I’m not some die hard SNL fan, I just enjoyed learning the process of the show。 But mostly, this is where I fell in love with Sally, a 38 yr old divorced comedy writer who comes across as a bit jaded at first。 This whole section allowed you to get to know Sally where she felt most comfortable and it was great writing。 Her dry wit and sarcasm paired with her inner ramblings of her social anxiety were hilarious and so very relatable。 She would have a seemingly normal interaction then overanalyze them in her head obsessively。 Hello self! (If run-on sentences offend you, you won’t like this book。 But it lent well to portraying her anxiety。) Overall she was passionate, unapologetic, and clever。The second act of this book is epistolary - emails between Sally and the musician, Noah。 Their banter is charming as hell and I think I grinned for 70 straight pages。 Things really speed up from this point on。 The 3rd part of the book, the romance gets turned up to full volume and everything comes to a head。 From the blurb you can guess the conflict and I do not feel like it was overblown or unrealistic。 She was just an average woman dating a superstar。 The fact she finds it all a bit surreal is understandable。 I’ve seen other reviews being annoyed by her insecurities but I never felt it was over the top or unrelatable。 Sally has always lived behind-the-scenes and had a habit of self-sabotage but Noah truly sees her for her。 I can always get behind a conflict that turns into a 4 page long love declaration。Noah, who by the way is a sweet, unassuming and true book boyfriend material, wins a gold star for communication。 Noah is, in the words of Julia Robert's character from Notting hill, just a boy standing in front of a girl asking her to love him。My only dislike, and it was a relatively small one, mid-final conflict the focus pivoted from the romance back to just women’s lit in a way that felt unnecessary and a bit frustrating for romance。(view spoiler)[Jerry gets COVID and I felt this whole event could have been cut or even have happened after the fight was resolved。 And still showed Sally, without angst, Noah’s sticking power。 (hide spoiler)] Ultimately, it was all very human - especially during COVID to have emergencies interfere with life。 But it made the conclusion and wrap up feel fairly rushed/abrupt。 However, I still adored this book。 It was so human and so very relatable。 Sweet, clever, and hilarious。 I think I highlighted half of the text。Fans of Annabel Monaghan and Emily Henry will enjoy this book。 Thank you Net Galley and Random House for this ARC! 。。。more

What an absolutely delightful romance novel! I’ll be recommending this one to all my friends。 The two main characters came across as real people with conversations that drew me in from beginning to end。 As a side note, if you’re a longtime Saturday Night Live fan like me, you’ll be especially intrigued。 Curtis Sittenfeld is now on my list of favorite authors。

A smart rom com that takes place behind the scenes of SNL? Sign me up! This is funny, sweet, and also informative about the life of a comedy writer。 I loved the characters, especially Sally。 She’s smart, funny, and is prone to self-sabotage。 I haven’t been the biggest fan of books that take place during the pandemic, but this does it well。 It manages to capture what life was like during 2020 without making the story about the pandemic。Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the advanced copy!

This was a little odd for me。The book was split into 3 parts and each part read like its own separate book。 They didn’t feel cohesive and it was kind of jarring。In the first section, the long drawn out descriptions of behind the scenes at TNO was so tedious I found myself skipping large parts。 There were just so many names and skits and details they didn’t add to the story at all。 If you cut out all the fluff, the parts that actually added to the story were very tiny。The second part was emails b This was a little odd for me。The book was split into 3 parts and each part read like its own separate book。 They didn’t feel cohesive and it was kind of jarring。In the first section, the long drawn out descriptions of behind the scenes at TNO was so tedious I found myself skipping large parts。 There were just so many names and skits and details they didn’t add to the story at all。 If you cut out all the fluff, the parts that actually added to the story were very tiny。The second part was emails between Noah and Sally。 I love this type of writing and found both the banter and the meaningful conversations to be great。 The final section was a single, incredibly long chapter that was standard romance plot。I enjoyed Sally and Noah as characters, I liked their growth and how real their conversations were。 I also appreciated that even thought there wasn’t a Noah POV, you could clearly understand where he was coming from and he had well developed motives and ideas。Overall, if section 1 was totally redone and streamlined I think this would have worked better for me as a romance story。 It should also be noted that there is really no comedy or funny parts actually in this。 As a warning, section 2 and 3 of this takes place during COVID which could be difficult for some people。 。。。more

I love a great romance story but do get a bit jaded with the formulaic nature seen in this genre。 Romantic Comedy was a very pleasant step away from this。 First of all, our main characters are older, approaching 40, so that sometimes annoying new adult angst and immaturity is absent。 Instead we have a couple of mature, but still flawed and awkward, characters who are working hard to do the best with their very different life pathways when they meet on the set of a late-night TV comedy show。 He's the famous good-looking rock star and she's the always-behind-the-scenes writer。 Sally is convinced that while there are plenty of examples of "hot famous women" in relationships with "average joe guys" that the opposite cannot be true and therefore, despite her attraction to Noah and the hint of chemistry between them, she makes sure there is no chance of anything happening between them。 This is the basis for the first part of the book, which is told purely from Sally's perspective。At this point, I was really wishing this was a dual point of view novel as I wanted to know what was going on in Noah's mind。 So yay! The second part of the book is set two years later in 2020 as the world goes into COVID lockdown。 Noah emails Sally and they strike up a very deep and intense series of emails over the course of a few weeks。 I think this was one of favorite parts of the book as we got a real glimpse inside Noah's very caring and sweet personality。 He may be a world famous rock star but just like the rest of us he has his insecurities and need for real connection。 There was vulnerabilities exposed, miscommunications, repair, humour, and heartfelt honesty。 It made my heart happy!Romantic Comedy was a unique and satisfying romance read。 I felt the main characters were relatable, written with depth and honestly and I just had to keep reading to see where the story would take them。A solid 4。5 star read! 。。。more

Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld ✨I was told that if I enjoyed Funny You Should Ask, I'd love this book。 I don't think that ended up being the case for me unfortunately。 This book is definitely not the "typical" romance。 I was totally thrown where there were only three chapters listed at the beginning when this is a 300+ page book。 One chapter is told chronologically with time stamps every time there's a shift, the next a series of emails, and the last just an extremely long chapter。 I do th Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld ✨I was told that if I enjoyed Funny You Should Ask, I'd love this book。 I don't think that ended up being the case for me unfortunately。 This book is definitely not the "typical" romance。 I was totally thrown where there were only three chapters listed at the beginning when this is a 300+ page book。 One chapter is told chronologically with time stamps every time there's a shift, the next a series of emails, and the last just an extremely long chapter。 I do think this was a super interesting way to structure the book though! The writing style is very witty and fast paced, yet there's descriptions of things (a room, how someone looks) and side tangents that I honestly didn't need to know that much about and didn't feel added all that much to the story。 However, that said the book felt very realistic and as if I was in Sally's head listening to her every thought。 I always find celebrity romances fun, and this wasn't an exception。 Seeing the behinds the scenes of a pseudo-Saturday Night Live and a popstar that was everyone's childhood crush was fun to read。 What wasn't fun to read was the real life events that played a pretty big role in the book - the 2016 election, the big C word。 I read to escape and wasn't expecting this book to follow so close to real life。 Maybe if I knew that going in it wouldn't have bothered me as much。 It took a little bit for me to be convinced, but Sally and Noah did have good chemistry and I was rooting for them to get together。 It's a slow burn romance with a satisfying payoff。 Overall, well written and a unique take on a romance。 Thank you Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for the eARC! Romantic Comedy releases on 4/4。single POV3。5/5 stars ⭐️ 1/5 spice level 🌶️ 。。。more

Not too keen on this one until the last 25%!I wanted to read this book based solely on the fact that it was written by Curtis Sittenfeld, as I loved Rodham。 Unfortunately I found the first half of the book far too detailed to be enjoyable。 The minutia of the off air production team for a comedy show at TNS was not appealing to me。 We got to go through the writing, then the run through, then the show - too much。 Unless you want to live vicariously through the book and experience real life comedy Not too keen on this one until the last 25%!I wanted to read this book based solely on the fact that it was written by Curtis Sittenfeld, as I loved Rodham。 Unfortunately I found the first half of the book far too detailed to be enjoyable。 The minutia of the off air production team for a comedy show at TNS was not appealing to me。 We got to go through the writing, then the run through, then the show - too much。 Unless you want to live vicariously through the book and experience real life comedy writing for live TV。I wasn't really engaged with any of the main characters at this point。 I did like the female friendships and some of the slick comedy lines, but I was srtuggling with it。 I read advance reviews that said to stick with it as the second half was so much better。 So I did。Then came into the storyline Covid, so if you are uncomfortable about revisiting that time this might not be the book for you。 I was ok with it but not with the dialogue being through emails。 I am not a fan of this style of writing so the next 25% wasn't too good for me either but fared better than the first 50%。Finally the last 25% of the book was pure genius and I loved it。 I felt that I finally got the characters and was really engaged with the story。 The writing is certainly intelligent and observational。 I'm pleased I didn't stop reading, but I think a lot of readers may not get to that last 25% as the first half is so bogged down in detail。 。。。more

Curtis Sittenfeld is one of my favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint。 She has this magical way of writing simple and humorous observations about some embarrassing truth that you assumed was only true for you, which makes her stories so relatable and touching。Sally Milz is a comedy writer who is on the writing staff of The Night Owls (TNO), a weekly sketch show that airs live on Saturday night (i。e。, SNL)。 She is a strong single New York woman- cool feminist, jaded about love, and ve Curtis Sittenfeld is one of my favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint。 She has this magical way of writing simple and humorous observations about some embarrassing truth that you assumed was only true for you, which makes her stories so relatable and touching。Sally Milz is a comedy writer who is on the writing staff of The Night Owls (TNO), a weekly sketch show that airs live on Saturday night (i。e。, SNL)。 She is a strong single New York woman- cool feminist, jaded about love, and very independent。 The book opens at the beginning of the TNO work week, with writers pitching sketch ideas for the Saturday night show, which will be hosted by Noah Brewster, a musician and total heartthrob。 Sally proposes a few skits, one of which is named after her coworker, Danny Horst。 Danny, a fairly average-looking comedian is engaged to a stunningly perfect and famous actress。 Sally observes that funny normal guys can get women way out of their league, but this does not apply when the genders are switched (the Danny Horst rule)。 Throughout the week, Sally and Noah get to know each other while working on the Danny Horst rule skit, among others, and develop a connection。 This is a clear violation of the Danny Horst rule。 The rest of the novel follows their relationship。 Will they have a romantic comedy ending? You'll have to read to find out。I had fun trying to guess who the characters might have been inspired by。 Did anyone else see John Mayer as Noah Brewster, despite the blond hair? Danny and Annabel seemed like they were obviously Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande, but I don't have a real person in mind for Sally! This is also one of the first books I've read where the COVID-19 pandemic is written into the plot line as a major event。 I would assume this will become more common, but it was kind of crazy to see it happen in a book。I also liked that although a lot of the conflict of the book centered around Sally's appearance and her physical insecurities, we weren't really given a clear description of what she actually looks like。 I really appreciate that the book didn't subscribe to the typical romance leading lady character description (early 20s with the goal of a white picket fence and 2 kids before 30), it was refreshing! I would LOVE to see this turn into a movie。I will say that it was slower than her other books。 I whipped through all of her others regardless of their length, and could not put them down。 This one felt like it dragged more at times, and although I looked forward to reading it at the end of the day, it didn't have the same compulsory feel as her others (the published, fully edited version may be different)。 I also felt like the moment of resolution/clarity that all good romcoms have wasn't quite as momentous as they usually are, but maybe that was the point。 Only in romcoms are things ever wrapped up in a neat bow。Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the e-ARC! 。。。more

I've been a Curtis Sittenfeld fan since Prep so I was really excited to get an advanced copy of Romantic Comedy。 This was set on the launch of a comedy show like SNL, and the main character is Sally, a writer who prefers to stay behind the scenes。 She meets Noah, the celebrity host of the week, and sparks fly。。。but Sally is a realist, and she knows that there's no way he could ever be interested in someone like her。 Right? Most of the first part of the book is a play by play of what goes on behind the scenes at the show, which could get a bit boring for some people, but I found it really interesting! Curtis Sittenfeld chose to include the pandemic during the book, and their communication over email during this time was cute and I enjoyed their banter。 I liked that Sally's character had real insecurities that anyone could relate to, which made the conflict realistic and not over the top like many romance novels。 Thank you to PRH and NetGalley for an advanced copy! 。。。more
